Ladies and gentlemen, mark your calendars for a very fun event benefiting a very important cause. The Starpoint Homerun Derby will be held Saturday afternoon, September 24th. All proceeds will go to benefit Starpoint School at TCU. Before I get into specifics about the fundraiser, you should know more about this amazing place.
What is Starpoint?
Starpoint is a school for special needs children between the ages of six and twelve. It was founded by M. J. and Alice Neeley in 1966 and is now an integral part of our community. It not only services children with learning differences, but it also serves as a laboratory classroom for future teachers who are enrolled in the TCU College of Education.
What Makes Starpoint Different?
Students of Starpoint are not categorized by traditional grades but are grouped with other students who share similar needs. Their Primary School focuses on teaching the students strategies that facilitate their learning and build their self-esteem. This then sets a foundation for Intermediate School, which focuses on preparing students for success in traditional classrooms once they graduate from Starpoint. The teachers individualize instruction and celebrate their students’ strengths making school fun and turning children into life-long learners.
Honorary Horned Frogs
Starpoint from the very beginning has held a close relationship with TCU. Students are able to take advantage of everything the campus community offers. Students are often allowed use of the University Recreation Center for physical education. Staff look for opportunities for students to engage in many campus events. The senior class participates in TCU’s robotics team taught by the technology instructor. Starpoint students also participate in several community service projects. Lastly, these students play a very important roll aseducators of undergraduate students within the College of Education who are learning to teach. As a former teacher, I cannot stress how amazing this is.
Now for the fun part! The Starpoint Homerun Derby will be held at TCU’s Lupton Baseball Stadium Saturday afternoon, September 24th. Derby games will be for all age groups from kindergarten to adults. Afterwards, meet members of the NCAA Regional Champion Horned Frog baseball team and listen to the Ray Johnston Band. Games are from 3:30-6:30 pm, food, drinks and live music from 6:30-8:30 pm. Tickets are $50 for Derby participants and $25 for those that just want to cheer the players and enjoy the company, food, and music. You must register in advance to attend. At the end of a quiet cul de sac, there is a driveway with a wooden gate. By this gate, surrounded by variegated pittosporum, there is a rock with “Mariposa del Lago” carved on it. As I walked through the simple stacked stone gateposts on the evening of July 13, the valet having taken my car, I was completely unprepared for the property that stretched in front of me.
Mariposa del Lago is a 1.62-acre estate on the shores of Eagle Mountain Lake. Although it’s only an easy 30-minute drive from downtown Fort Worth, I felt like I was a million miles away. The house and air-conditioned garage are nestled in gorgeously mature landscaping, as are the tennis court and putting green. The house’s stone and stucco façade is covered with creeping fig which, combined with the lushness of the landscaping, gives a sense of coolness, even on a sticky July evening.
Upon entering the house, my attention was immediately captured by the view. There are views of the pool and the lake beyond from almost every room in the house. Pulled in by the spectacular panorama, I passed through the foyer and crossed the living room without seeing them. The view over the grounds and pool down to the lake is spectacular. Finally, I shook myself out of my reverie and set off to explore the house.
Mariposa del Lago is grand. It has 6 bedrooms and 5 baths, the previously-mentioned air-conditioned garage, tennis court, and putting green, as well as a Moroccan-inspired cabana, a pool, a hot tub, and a two-story boathouse. It is over 6900 square feet and has almost 3500 square feet of outdoor living space. And yet Mariposa del Lago is comfortable, inviting, warm. Many grand houses feel a bit like museums; you cannot touch anything for fear of setting off an alarm. I did not feel that way at Mariposa del Lago.
The design is contemporary, yet rustic and is distinctly Texan. Clean lines are warmed with hand-scraped wood and warm stone. The top-of-the-line kitchen, where Tim Love’s catering had set up a delicious raw bar, is large enough to cater a party, while small enough to comfortably cook dinner for the family. It opens onto an outdoor kitchen, complete with grill, smoker, and wood fired pizza oven, where a taco bar had been set up.
Heading back inside, I went exploring. I admired the climate-controlled wine cellar, the downstairs game room, the cozy study, and the gorgeous master suite that takes up the whole second story of the house. However, what I really wanted to do was curl up on one of the inviting couches in the living room and bask in the view. But there was more exploring to do!
Mariposa del Lago is cleverly designed to take advantage of the stunning views with balconies and patios that overlook the lake. The hot tub is nestled onto the edge of a drop-off that overlooks the pool and guest cabana. And the cabana! Designed with a Moroccan flair, it has a great room with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake, a wet bar, and a full bath. The cabana’s balcony overlooks the private beach, where paella was being made over a wood fire, and the luxurious two-story boat house. I snuck over to the boat house for some homemade ice cream and sat for a while in the sitting area on the upper deck, enjoying the lake breezes.
On the lawn, a band was playing. People were mingling, laughing as they enjoyed the passed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Others were exploring the grounds. I felt like I was in a movie, and yet it was real. Mariposa del Lago is extraordinary – luxurious, rich, full of amenities while staying true to its Texas roots, inviting you to come in and make yourself at home.
